believe that the most important 'key' to a successful relationship would have to be 'trust'. I believe that with trust, love will follow. However, what I have noticed is that many people think trust, or expect that trust is to be earned by the other person, when in all actuality it is something that comes from within yourself. All too many times people will say they don't trust due to past experiences. What they don't realize is that they have built up those proverbial walls to protect them from the very thing they are searching for... yes, there is a risk in trusting someone, but when you finally find that 'right' person, it makes all the past experiences and lessons learned very much worth the risk. I've been wondering what I'm going to write all day today, and finally, instead of a letter to you I think I'll write about the day that started all of this, the day we had our first kiss.
It was November 23rd, 2004, my family came up to your place for Thanksgiving. We arrived the day before, around noon, I waited for you to get home from school and couldn't have been happier when I saw you get off the bus and walk towards me. I remember giving you the biggest hug in the world, and you asked why I had a giant ring in my pony-tail. I honestly thought it looked cute with my hair wrapped around it, but what 10 year old girl doesn't think she looks cute? Haha. We just kind of hung out all day, not really doing much, just spending time together until we were called in for dinner. After that, I remember we sat in your room and listened to Linkin Park, your favorite band at the time, and argued about them because I thought they absolutely sucked. Our parents came to your bedroom door and told us that we could stay up with each other, but that we couldn't sleep in the same bed or together at all for that matter, to which we both agreed. We continued listening to Linkin Park, and talked for hours. I started getting tired and you asked me this question, "Every kiss begins with.....?" and me.. trying to be cute leaned in to try to kiss you and said, "me?", but the real answer was "K". I fell asleep shortly after, and woke in your arms once I heard roosters crowing around 6am or so, the sun was just starting to rise. I shook you awake and told you I was going into the living room to sleep, and I hopped off the bed. As I was leaving, you got down as well, and gave me a hug and said goodnight. Without missing a beat, you leaned in for a kiss, it was just one little peck lasting not even a second, but it was OUR first kiss, which ended up being the start of about 6 little pecks before I could get out of your doorway and into the living room. The next day I was all smiles, we were each others first kiss, and from then on we were inseparable. We walked through this patch of briars to a tree later on in the day, it was of those trees you see in movies, with full shade, and one branch that swooped low enough to sit on. We spent hours on that branch, talking and kissing, haha. We were so innocent back then, and to think that the first lips that I ever kissed will also be the last, what are the chances of that?
I'll never forget that day, Cody. I'll take every opportunity I get to tell somebody about it because it's like a dream to me, and quite possibly the sweetest thing that I've ever heard or that has happened to me. I cannot tell you how much I miss you. Since you have been gone I feel as if I am wearing a pair of glasses that reveal the harsh clarity of reality. It appears that my life had been shrouded in a comfortable blur for the sixty-three years of our marriage. Everything that I took for granted is amplified now that you are missing from me.
More than anything I get stuck thinking about our beginnings. All we had was each other and that rusted old car. I never thought I would miss those stressful days, but they sound so good to me now. We always had a way of pushing through the hard times together. I never understood how you had so much confidence that everything would wind up okay in the end. I guess the only two things that helped me keep my chin up, in the midst of all that hard work and worrying, were you and driving that car.
You knew how much I loved to drive so you always let me take the wheel. I honestly cannot think of another man who would have let their wife have so much control back in those days. You were so good to me, never stopping short of making me happy. Driving brought me so much happiness until now. I never realized how much I appreciated our car rides. They were a time when I had you and only you with no interference from the outside world. Being in the car with you was like a quiet vacation from life. Car rides hurt me so badly these days. I think the big difference is that I loved our car rides. The “our,” makes so much difference.
When I drive now I feel the absence of your hand on my thigh, it feels so cold. I hear the quiet hum of the engine so loudly, this noise is supposed to replace you? It will never replace your voice, your thoughts, your feelings. I now have to look both ways when I cross a street or change lanes, it feels so strange. I just cannot get used to looking to the right. Where are you to say, “all clear my love?” I am reminded of my careless mistakes by the angry cars behind me. Do they do not realize that they only remind me of the empty passenger seat? I hate that passenger seat.
Where are you to take the wheel while I put on my lip stick? I will never be deaf to you calling me “fancy face,” after the fact. I still see you smile; you knew you could never go wrong with that line. How can I feel beautiful without you here?
When I would forget my purse in the house you would automatically hop out of the car to get it for me. Never mad, you would do this, and even give me a kiss upon your return. Forgetfulness doesn’t get me a kiss these days, only a chill, from having to venture into the cold once more. Sometimes I don’t know if it is worth it, but the cold never stopped you.
Our songs on the radio ring in my ears. I am not used to the famous voices. Your booming voice mixed with my laughter was my music. A melody will never sound so sweet. I guess music just can’t do the trick for me anymore.
Whenever I was sad we would drive. I would eventually pull over and cry my heart out on your shoulder. You would always run your thumb under my eyes to wipe my tears. You were always so perfect at this, never messing up my makeup, all the while telling me how pretty I looked when I cried. You made me feel beautiful even through my sobs. I look back and I realize I had nothing to be upset about. But now that I have lost you I have a real reason to cry. Where are you to dry my eyes and kiss my wet cheeks? I just don’t think I can’t do this by myself.
I have trouble opening the driver’s side door now. I am not sure if I ever opened it on my own until I lost you. You were such a gentleman. I think I might be getting too weak to open it on my own. Maybe it might be time for me to stop driving. I really hate it now anyways. I guess I only loved driving so much because you were there beside me. I am trying so hard to be strong for you; I know you would never allow me to be sad. But I simply don’t think I will be happy until I have you again. Maybe I will go on my last drive today. It was long time ago we met in that magical city and we have started to live a wonderful life, together as you my wife. I was so happy when we were together and I was so happy when we had our son. We have problems and I know I could have been a better husband. But now that you gone, and worse I made you take that decision, it hurts so much I can't even explain. I have never been hurt this much ever in my life. We had happy life, I would say. We fought but then again we made up. I miss how you crawl up the bed and curl to my side and grab my hand and say loving words to make up after a fight. But baby I am not going to talk about the bad moments because we have so much good memories we shared. Even the last Sunday when we went to the beach and the entire week before this big stupid fight.

When you came back remember I asked you to promise not to leave me again and promise work on counselling or something if we have problems again. Baby I am so to keep hurting you but I did those because I was deeply hurt and thought you don't love me. Remember I told you many times that I want to feel your love. Baby I am not a baaad person or the worst person you think I am. I am a good person who did some bad things. I said a lot to hurt you. I never meant anything. It was just to hurt your feelings to get back at you. But what I should have done is to forget about what happened and live with you. Because you tried hard during the last couple of months. But I had a hard time overcoming the England last week. I wish there was someone who saw this fault in me and told me. I wish...oh baby I wish.
The day we had the fight I told you not to take my son because I knew that you will not leave me without our son. That was the best I did to stop you. But I don't think I was thinking that way. You were thinking I really meant it. How could I raise our son without you. You don't know baby. After the fight I told you when we were sitting on the bed..I held you had and hugged you and said I am sorry and you don't have to go. This is the best I did to mend your broken heart. I should have touched your feet and begged. I would have if I knew you were leaving. Oh baby I miss you. But then you left to get salary. I asked you If you want me to come...because I was hurting and knew you were as well. I wanted to come. But you said you will come back. Oh baby why you didn't? Then me and our son waited till 3pm and you were not back. I got so worried and after son's lunch I walked down to the city. We went to mall and everywhere. We on a bench and had chips and waited hoping you will pass by. Our son was just holding my had all alone. Never asked to let go as he usually does. I felt he also knew something is wrong. Because usually when you gone to work he never ask about you. And I only say ammi is at work and he does his things until you come. But that day he was sooo sad asking me "ko ammi" again and again even when we were walking.
We came back and you were not back at home. I got very scared knowing you were sensitive I went to the Airport. You were not there. On our way back our son was still asking when you would come home. When we came back from the airport and found you were not home baby I was devasted. Didn't know where to go and what to do Called the police and asked them to help me to find them. But since you were seen at 2 hrs ago they told me to wait till tomorrow morning. That wasn;t enough for me. I asked some of your contacts on the phone to help me locate you. I just wanted to find you and bring you home and to beg you to forgive me and to live again like we did. But by 9 I was feeding the little one. Then they came to arrest me. Our son ran out and said thatti don't go...Oh my god. I wish you could see my tears when I recollect and write this. You are an angel. But I am not a devil as well. I am a man in love who made some terrible mistakes. I know that.
Baby we start arguing some silly things and then we both say things to hurt each other. That is where all this began. Now I can't tell you how I feel. I can't. They won't let me. I am lonely in this house. I hear you and our son talking in the living room. I have not gone to the living room since you left. Our son's toys are everywhere. In fact, some men are wearing rings but there's no difference between them and the players you see around. If he was indeed a responsible husband with conscience, he would know that it is not right to do what he's doing.
I'm aware of how some of you ladies are so infatuated with cars. Here on Legon campus, I see it all. Some ladies would follow any nonentity just because the bloke owns a car. I don't know what is in a car or how someone's car enhances their personality, but some of these ladies actually enact drama to show the rest of the world that they are dating guys with cars.
When her guy pulls up with her in front of her hall of residence, she would roll down the window or sometimes open it and wait for as long as she can, so that passers-by would notice her. When she is done with that, she would come down and move to the guy's window and spend eternity pretending to be chatting, while clutching proudly a pack from Papaye Restaurant.
Serwaa, fried rice and chicken has suddenly become a status symbol among some ladies here. Strange, isn't it? But she's not done yet.
While at it, she would be raising their head and looking round boastfully to see who is watching. Then when the guy is finally leaving she will give him a peck, if she is the hard core type. Then she'll stand in front of the car, and waive. But she will not move immediately into her room. She must fidget with her blackberry phone for a while, just to make sure that at least one more person knows she alighted from the car that has just pulled away.
Those who usually don't have the leisure and pleasure for this kind of drama are those who date sugar daddies. For them, they often alight as if they were disembarking from a military vehicle, while the bald-headed or pot-bellied bloke, who is sometimes as old as the girl's grandfather speeds away. People's fathers and people's daughters! Sometimes I don't know where to place the blame.
One evening, I intentionally asked a lady from Volta Hall, the all-female hall of residence in Legon, why their car park is always replete with some of the plushest vehicles in town, even though very few of them actually own cars. “We have the most beautiful car park,” she told me. But you and I know the answer. Ladies and cars!
Serwaa, when I proposed love to you, the fear I nursed and for which reason I thought you would turn down my proposal was the fact that I didn't own a car. Fortunately you turned out to be one of those reasonable ladies who see beyond what one has today. I think ladies like you are in the minority.
Most ladies of today are the “aben wo ha” type. They want already-made guys to date, and perhaps, to marry. While it is natural to feel attracted to someone who appears successful, I think the primary goal for going out with someone should be the love. Does he value you? Or he thinks you're just one of those who will fall for him because of his cash or car? I have stated somewhere that those who fall in love that way often regret, even in rare cases when such relationships result in marriage.
After giving birth to two or three children, such ladies, whose beauty in their prime could cause a man to revoke a celibacy vow, become housemaids. When a colleague asks, “How's your husband doing?” their hearts begin to throb.
“Our husband or my husband?” she would ask in her mind and go ahead to say, “Hmmm, he's fine.”

“You know men and their thing,” would come the reply. “I don't know how God created them.”

You went after the cash and he gave you the cash. You wanted to ride in a plush car and he was one of the few guys in town who owned that latest class of Benz. You're now his incubator and his cook. That's how useful you are to him now. You should have asked what he wanted before running after him.

Serwaa, this is what many ladies have reduced themselves to. I used to think that all of you were the same until I met you. I did not pretend to be what I was not when I met you. And you loved me for who I was, with or without a car. I therefore find it both very unfortunate and strange that today, a car is beginning to threaten our relationship.
Ever since you went for your attachment in that company that so-called married man has never failed to bring you home. I was shocked to know that he lives in Nungua but will drop you in Dansoman every evening before struggling home in that thick traffic.
Serwaa, no sensible guy will sit and watch this unless he doesn't love you. The first time I told you I was uncomfortable with what was happening, you retorted sharply, “Then will you come and pick me after work?”
That was an insult to me. If I had a car I would. But I don't. And you know it. But you still asked, perhaps in an attempt to deflate my ego. Maybe, you achieved that aim. But I can't live with this any longer. Even if he lived in Dansoman, I would have had the cause to be worried because he picks you every day. It is not a good idea. And I don't want it to get to a point where you'll find it impossible to resist any advances from him. He's a man. And you two are not pieces of dry wood. You have feelings.
Serwaa, don't think that I don't trust you. I do, but I'm talking from experience. My last relationship was ruined by someone who owned a car. And I know of many such relationships that have landed on rocks because of the intrusion of guys who owned cars and started giving lifts until the lifts developed into something else. You're not superhuman. If things go on this way, it will get to a point where your emotional attachment to this “good Samaritan” of yours will reel out of control. And that's what I can't bear. That's what I fear will tear us apart. I dread losing you. And you know it.
I don't own a car and I surely do not envy anyone who owns one. Life is a competition but it isn't a race. If the right time comes – and I know it will come pretty soon – I won't mind buying you any car of your choice. But I cannot be forced to live above my means.
Let me emphasise that I don't have anything against you being offered a lift by a guy. But your penchant for jumping into a guy's car at the least opportunity is the source of my heartache.
This is the last time I'm saying this. Let that man know that your fiancé is not comfortable with his “generosity.” And it must cease with immediate effect.

That we shouldn’t be satisfied with being above the surface with one another or secluding ourselves from everyone we hold dear in our life. Rather lets be open to going out, being with our friends, and not becoming the couple that abandoned our friends because we couldn’t stand to be away from each other.
I want to have our own lives, but also have OUR OWN lives.

I watched a movie the other day, it was about this girl who became best friends with this boy and fell out of touch once they entered high school. Then after college they ran into each other, both at different spots in their lives. But some how they were in perfect places to have met each other again.
It hit me hard, only because i know in my heart when i met you i want to be the best MAN, i can be. I want to have my life so in order, that you know I will be someone who will take care of you, nurture you, lift you up, and protect you every day of your life.

I know that guys get a bad wrap when it comes to cooking, but I want to let you know that, while I may not be the best, I’ll give it a shot. After all, I do make a killer French Toast recipe, or so I’m told. When I see you my heart wells up in side. Not only do I love your outward beauty, but I also love your inward beauty as well. I’ll miss you when I’m teaching everyday. I’ll tell my elementary school kids about you and this will give me an opportunity to share our story with them. Who knows? Maybe it will be a platform for me to lead a few of them to Jesus Christ.
When we get married, we are going to think things are perfect. We’ll go on thinking everything is okay and then we’ll have kids. I’ll try my best to serve you with my all, but I know I’ll fail at times. I’m not perfect and if I was I’d be Jesus. Thank you for showing me love even when I fail.
I realize that we’re going to have our fair share of arguments. My face will probably be red, and sometimes I might take a walk because I’m so mad. But I want you to know that I’m sorry. Would you forgive me?
Thank you for accepting me for who I am and not what I do. I realize that my job is something that I’m going to love dearly, but my identity is found in Jesus Christ.
I don’t think I’ve met you yet, but maybe I have. When I find you, I’m going to pursue you like God pursued me. He knows me inwardly and outwardly, and I want to know the same stuff about you.
Lastly, I wanted to say that there are going to be some things I’ve done in my past that are sad and pretty pathetic. I’m going to tell you these things at some point in our relationship (most likely) before marriage. Some of these things are going to make you mad and sad. You’re going to know me inwardly and outwardly. Thank you for loving and accepting me enough to forgive me for what I’ve already done.

I found myself thinking about you today. Wondering where you are, what you’re thinking and doing. It hurts a little not to be with you, but I can live with that for now, knowing that we’ll spend the rest of our lives together. I’m writing this letter to help you understand what I’ve been thinking about and why. I probably don’t know all the right things to say, but my feelings and words are from the heart.

Real love is so different from infatuation or simple pleasure. It isn’t abusive or selfish or purely physical. Real love involves mutual respect, affection, trust, equality, and a shared spirituality. Real love doesn’t revolve around s£*x! Real love grows into a relationship where s£*xual intimacy will only serve to express that love – marriage.
I talked with a friend the other day about chastity – modesty and purity in our thoughts, words, the way we dress and act – how it’s a building block for a perfect love that casts out all fear. And s£*x before marriage brings many fears – pregnancy, STDs, the emotional scars associated with broken relationships. So, in the search for perfect love, it only makes sense to practice chastity and wait until you’re married to give yourself to the person you love. And --- OUR marriage will bring with it the promise of forever. We will give ourselves to one another completely, become best friends – soul mates. So even though we may be apart right now, by living chastely for each other in the present we can build our future together.
Have you ever been in the middle of doing something when you stop to think, “This would be perfect if….?” Those words come to mind often – for example, on a Fall day, with leaves covering the ground and crisp, cool breezes blowing, and I think, “This would be perfect if…. She were here.” The thought that someday you will be here comforts me.
And… I want that same thought to comfort you. Whether you realize it or not, I’ve been there in your thoughts, that shiver or the goose bumps you get every once in a while – in the long daydream or a lingering glance. You don’t have to wonder anymore, because I’m real, I love you and I am waiting for you – in every way. And now that you know I’m here, I hope you’ll do the same. Whenever you feel scared, unsure, or pressured to give a part of yourself away, read this letter. Think about us and how perfect it will be when we are together.
